I am highly honoured to annouce opening of website www.cohands.in launched by Council of Handicraft Development Corporations ( COHANDS ) , New Delhi.
This website www.cohands.in is dedicated to artisans of India. The launch of this website would educate and provide them information about world wide day to day market trends on a
click of mouse.Council of Handicraft Development Corporations ( COHANDS ) has done a wonderful job by launching its own purposeful website.
On this occasion,may I take this oppurtunity to introduce Council of Handicraft Development Corporations to one and all living in this world of creativity,reliability,quality and service.
Council of Handicraft Development Corporations in short COHANDS has been established in the year 1983 under Societies Act 1860 uder the aegis of Government of India,then Ministry of Industry
now Ministry of Textiles,Office of Development Commissioner [ Handicrafts ],initially with 28 now 32 State and Central Government Handicrafts Development Corporations as its Permanent Members.
Besides,COHANDS has brought National Awardees / National Merit Certificate Holders / Federations / Cluster Groups / NGO's working in the field of Handicraft especially women artisans for eradication
of poverty under its umbrella by enrolling then as Institutional Members.
Thus COHANDS being an Apex body has vast responsibilities and gargantuan duties to perform in promoting,developing Indian Handicraft in the highest order to compete with the very best any where in the
world.To fulfill its commitments and discharge its gargantum duties,COHANDS has involved itself in different initiatives to forge ahead , despite challenges.
A large section of our country's population live mostly in rural areas and earn their livelihood by practising handicraft which is one of the most fascinating but at the same time most complex
sector of our country.Our artisans have the potential to compete in the International Market,but do not have the proper guidance and channels to translate their efficiency into revenue generation.
COHANDS is the appropriate agency to help them to achieve this goal.
COHANDS assists grass-root level organisations,self-help groups and small entrepreneurs engaged in Handicrafts across India.Influencing trade is the primary mandate of COHANDS,but
it does not engage in trade directly.It provides the necessary impetus,thrust and direction to trade.This energies the elements which affect trade,thereby leading to positive and fair level
playing field for all stakeholders,primarily the artisans and the crafts person.
It is believed that Handicrafts is the best possible medium to carry forward vision envisaged.I am privileged to state here that COHANDS has in the recent past penetrated the global markets
and established its position therein quite acceptably.COHANDS has been providing much needed support to the National Awardees,Shilp Gurus and other development partners and
achieved desired results in the direction of consolidating forward linkages for this segments as well.
As I look at the future,it is full of opportunities and challenges.Brighter and solid prospects lye ahead and sky is the limit.COHANDS must be prepared to take tough calls on compelling
of tomorrow's handicraft sector to keep alive valuable Craft Traditions of India.
Last but not the least,I have the privilege of being the Chairman of COHANDS and has a feeling of great satisfaction and contentment for bringing about a transformation in the landscape of COHANDS.
